Double Strollers – What’s all the fuss about?

Ahhh, becoming a parent. Some people dream of it, try many different routes of becoming pregnant and when your little bundle of joy finally arrives you’re faced with sleepless nights, constant screaming, and So. Much. Sick. It makes you wonder why people would want to do it all over again!? But people do.

Double strollers are becoming more and more popular, especially with younger families. Is it best to have side by side strollers? What’s the safest option? Do I have to be paying double the price for one compared to a standard pram?

In this post, we’ll be going through some questions we get asked the most, answering them to the best we can, and pointing out some of the best double strollers, so you can find out what the best option is for you.

So what is a double stroller?

There are two types of double strollers: inline (or tandem) and side by side. Tandem is typically the same width as a single stroller, meaning one seat is in front of the other. Some well known brands make these such as iCandy with the Peach 7, Cosatto with the Wow XL and Silver Cross with the Wave.

If you have twins, or two children at very similar ages, you may want them to be able to interact with each other, which would mean the side by side option may be better. However, if your house has narrow doorways you can struggle due to width needed for side by side prams. However, there are solutions, including the Roma Gemini which is specifically designed to fit through narrow doorways, and an impressive width length of just 69cm wide. Other side by side strollers include the Bugaboo Donkey, the Baby Jogger GT2 and the BabyStyle Oyster Twin.

Is one better than the other?

Both prams can be a practical solution to having twins or youngsters of similar ages. The choice comes down to preference, and how often you will be using your double pram.

How about storage? 

If storing your pram is going to be an issue for you, you will want a pram that will be easy to fold and easy to store. This is where the main differences between the two styles come in. If you are looking at a tandem stroller, then all you need to do is remove the carrycot (and or seat units) and the frame will fold easily, making it a single frame to fold. This would mean that you can store your frame relatively easily with minimum storage. However this also does mean you have to find space for your carrycot and or seat units.

With your side by side prams, its slightly different. Many of the side by side prams fold with the seat units, meaning there is no storage needed for extra items. However folded double strollers can take up more storage space. The Roma Gemini folded boasts dimension sizes of H79cm x L42cm x W69cm. If you feel that you can fit this in your car boot or in any other storage places you’ll be fine.

What should I buy?

As mentioned, this comes down to personal choice and what you feel you will be doing with your pram. If you are looking for something that’s easy to store, you may want to look at a side by side stroller, as this will save you having to store any extra carrycots or any extra items.
